Guidance for current, retiring and former professional athletes — and for the clubs, academies and staff around them. These are working documents rather than motivational reading: what to think about, when to start, and how to turn a playing career into a foundation for the next one.
Why this exists
Most athletes are told to plan for life after sport. Far fewer are shown how.
A professional playing career builds a rare set of capabilities: discipline held over years, the ability to keep making decisions when the pressure is highest, an instinct for standards, and a working understanding of feedback, teams and preparation. What it rarely builds is a vocabulary for describing those capabilities outside sport, or the time and headspace to work out what comes next.
That gap is what these resources address. Each guide sets out the practical decisions in front of an athlete or a club, the questions worth answering early, and the ways a transition can go wrong when it is left until the final contract runs out. Together they cover the same ground AIM works through with athletes: strengths and identity, education and qualifications, career direction, business and entrepreneurship, financial decision-making, wellbeing and relationships.
